What is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a rejuvenation primarily of the labia minora, but also can include the labia majora. The labia minora (inner labia) and majora (outer labia) are external folds of skin surrounding the vulva.
A disproportionately enlarged labia minora may result for several reasons. The most common is congenital. Acquired causes are childbirth, intercourse, chronic irritation and inflamation due to urinary incontinence or dermatitis. The enlargement of the labia minora often results in discomfort in tight pants, sports activities and self consciousness and embarrassment. For this reason, female patients seek out Dr. Chugay to help them look and feel their best.
The labia majora can lose volume with age. When comparing a younger patient to an older patient, there is a noticeable difference in the fullness of the labia majora. This can be corrected with fat injection into the labia majora to give a more "plump" and youthful appearance.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and or re-shapes the labia minora. The original method of labial reduction excised or removed the protruding portion of the tissue and sewed the raw edge. This resulted in a scar along the entire surface of the labia and loss of the normal color, contour and appearance of the labia. The newer Labiaplasty contouring procedure preserves the natural color and contour of the labial edge. The size of the labia minor is reduced by removing the excessive tissue as a "V" wedge and then sewing the edges together. This technique maintains the normal appearance of the labia with almost undetectable scars. For labia majora surgery, small puncture sites are made in the pubic region to allow for injection of fat that has been harvested from another portion of the body (typically the abdomen and waist area). The surgery can be done with local anesthesia only or in combination with sedation.
Post Operative Care
Post operatively, you will have dissolvable sutures in place and there will be no need for suture removal. You will be asked to take twice daily sitz baths with betadine for 7-10 days, then resume normal hygiene. Acitivty can be begun immediately after surgery and increased as tolerated, with no heavy exercise or lifting for 2 weeks. No sexual activity of any kind for at least 6 weeks or until cleared by Dr. Chugay. No tampon use is allowed for 4 weeks. A panty liner may be worn and is recommended for the first 2 weeks after surgery, as there may be some oozing from your incisions early in the post operative course.
