Ruptured Silicone Breast Implants – Replacement Surgery
Dr. Chugay is frequently asked about the need to replace implants after 10 years. While it is not mandatory, he highly recommends replacing implants after 10 years rather than waiting for 15+ years as there is an increased risk of implant rupture with time.
In this video shown below Dr. Chugay does a comparison showing how old style versus new style breast implant ruptures occur and illustrating how the new styles stay in place better than older styles.
The first patient in the video was seen 15 years after her breast augmentation and was noted at the time of surgery to have a leaking right breast implant.
Dr. Chugay prefers silicone implants as they have a more natural feel, and the leak rate is approximately 1%/year that you have the implants or roughly 10% leak rate at 10 years.
Some people worry about breast implants, especially silicone implants, leaking. A large part of the worry is due to a moratorium on silicone implants back in the ’90s when saline implants were deemed to be the safest implant solution. After a decade of research and investigation, researchers, scientists, and doctors couldn’t find a confirmed link between silicone implants and cancer and so silicone breast implants were re-released but in a thicker more cohesive gel.
